Local community group, Canvey Island Carnival Association, is celebrating after being awarded  £10,000 in National Lottery funding to support its work bringing the annual Carnival Parade and Festival to the community. The group, based in Canvey Island, Essex, will use the cash to fund this year’s 10th Anniversary Festival, which will take place Saturday 11th July 2020 on the Labworth field, Canvey Island Seafront.

Canvey Island Carnival Association has been running since 2011 and is staffed by 7 volunteers. It was founded after a 10 year absence of an annual carnival parade.

The Carnival serves two objectives. First and foremost it’s about Charity. Every penny  from the street collection is donated to local charity and Island based projects and organisations and over the last 9 years more than £19,000 has been donated.  Secondly, it’s about bringing the Community together and providing a fun and memorable day that everyone, no matter what their age, can enjoy and be a part of.

This funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, which distributes money raised by National Lottery players for good causes and is the largest community funder in the UK, will be put towards this year’s festival that takes place on the Labworth field after the Parade.  To celebrate this milestone achievement live music and entertainment from both local home grown talents and tribute acts are planned and a fete of many stalls ranging from small crafts to specialist cuisines, kids games, car driving and go-karting experiences and much more, bringing together residents and visitors reinforcing the great Canvey Island community spirit.

Zoe Watson, Chair of Canvey Island Carnival Association, says: “We’re absolutely delighted that The National Lottery Community Fund has recognised our work in this way. Now, thanks to National Lottery players we will be able to press on with our plans to bring a much bigger event to the community this year and in turn, raise more funds to donate to the many good causes, projects and organizations on Canvey Island.”
